TSA training is not required for all medical couriers, but it is mandatory for those who handle air cargo. For air cargo, this involves completing the Indirect Air Carrier (IAC) training and a background check, which can take up to 120 days for approval. For ground-based medical deliveries, training focuses on other crucial certifications like HIPAA, OSHA, and DOT compliance, rather than specific TSA requirements.

For couriers handling air cargo

  • TSA Certification is required: This is necessary if you will be transferring cargo from a truck to an airplane.
  • Application process: You must apply for TSA certification through the Indirect Air Carrier Management System.
  • Security threat assessment: The TSA will conduct a security threat assessment as part of the certification process.
  • Approval time: The approval process can take up to 90 to 120 days.
  • Employer-provided: Many companies that require this certification will provide assistance with the application and training process.

We suggest that anyone new to the role of medical courier NOT take this training, as you will spend money for the training and will NOT see ANY return on the investment immediately. It takes time for the client to trust your services and reliability. Start with the $90 package and then buy other courses if you get the option to handle air cargo and generate new revenue.

As a medical courier is a vendor for the healthcare providers (known as covered entities under HIPAA), they should take the Business Associate (vendors for Healthcare entities fall under this category) version of the HIPAA Training.
